3 Reasons to Learn a New Language

There are tons of studies these days that compare bilingual or multilingual people to monolingual people. Overwhelmingly, bilingual and multilingual people come up on top. There are so many reasons to learn a new language; here are just a few great ones:

Improve your marketability. In today’s globalized society, having more than one language under your belt is almost a necessity. So many companies have offices around the world or do business internationally. Even if the company is small and does business in just one country or even one city, there is a high chance you will encounter a customer or associate who communicates in a different language. No matter where you want to work, knowing more than one language will make you a more desirable employee.

Expand your mind. Lots of research shows that being bilingual actually changes the way your brain works! When a person is used to switching between two languages, the brain begins to function differently than the brain of someone who is monolingual. Some studies show that being multilingual makes people good at conflict management, able to learn things more easily, and even keeps the brain’s cognitive functioning from declining later in life. Learning that second (or third, etc.) language could help you stay sharp as you age!

Travel abroad easier. This might seem obvious; of course knowing a second language will help you when you travel abroad. It’s true that knowing the language of the foreign country you are visiting will make your trip a lot easier and decrease your chances of locals trying to take advantage of you for not knowing the language. But it could even help you when you travel to places where none of the languages you speak are the national language. There will be a greater chance that you will encounter someone who speaks one of your languages. There is also a greater likelihood that you will pick up the language of the foreign country easily; it is widely studied that the more languages you know, the easier it is for you to learn one more.

With all of these benefits, it’s a wonder that more people don’t invest the time or money into learning a new language. Here at peersedu.com, it’s made a bit easier with tutors and inexpensive sessions. What are you waiting for? It’s never too late to learn something new.
